pensare<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-m3soem9o-0c3c55c1821bcf77765dffc6ee2ec3c2 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Ogni anno migliaia di balene vengono ferite o uccise a causa delle <strong>collisioni<\/strong> con imbarcazioni, in particolare con grandi porta-container, che oggi trasportano attraverso gli oceani l&#8217;80% delle merci commercializzate. Le collisioni rappresentano la principale causa di morte per balene, balenottere e capodogli e, per inciso, il <strong>Mediterraneo<\/strong> non fa eccezione. Uno degli ostacoli per la protezione delle specie pi\u00f9 vulnerabili \u00e8 anche la difficolt\u00e0 di ottenere dati sugli incidenti a livello mondiale. \u00a0Un nuovo importante studio condotto dall&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Washington, a cui ha partecipato anche Tethys, ha quantificato, per la prima volta, il rischio di collisioni tra <strong>navi e grandi cetacei<\/strong> a livello globale per quattro delle specie pi\u00f9 diffuse e minacciate dal traffico marittimo: balenottera azzurra, balenottera comune, megattera e capodoglio.<\/p>\n<p>La ricerca, pubblicata in novembre sulla prestigiosa <strong>rivista scientifica <em>Science<\/em><\/strong>, evidenzia come il traffico marittimo mondiale si sovrapponga per il 92% circa agli areali di queste specie. &#8220;In altre parole, ogni anno le navi percorrono distanze equivalenti a migliaia di volte il tragitto avanti e indietro per la luna, attraversando le aree di distribuzione di queste specie, e il problema \u00e8 destinato a crescere con l\u2019impennata dei trasporti via mare prevista per i prossimi decenni&#8221;, dichiara Briana Abrahms, dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Washington, ricercatrice al Center for Ecosystem Sentinels,\u00a0 e co-autrice del lavoro.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Le collisioni tra balene e navi sono state studiate per lo pi\u00f9 a livello locale, e la distribuzione del rischio resta sconosciuta per ampie aree&#8221;, afferma Anna Nisi, prima autrice del lavoro e ricercatrice del Center for Ecosystem Sentinels dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Washington. &#8220;Il nostro studio cerca di colmare queste lacune su scala globale. Una volta individuato dove \u00e8 pi\u00f9 probabile che si verifichino delle collisioni, ci sono interventi semplici che potrebbero <strong>ridurre notevolmente il rischio.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attualmente, si \u00e8 visto, solo il 7 % circa delle aree a pi\u00f9 alto rischio di collisioni dispone di <strong>misure di protezione<\/strong>, tra cui la riduzione della velocit\u00e0 per le navi, obbligatoria o volontaria che sia. &#8220;Nonostante le preoccupazioni emerse dallo studio, abbiamo anche individuato alcune importanti opportunit\u00e0&#8221;, continua la Abrahms, &#8220;come il fatto che implementare delle misure di gestione su anche solo un <strong>ulteriore 2,6%<\/strong> della superficie degli oceani basterebbe a proteggere tutte le aree a maggior rischio.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Solitamente, \u00e8 difficile mettere d\u2019accordo <strong>industria e conservazione<\/strong>&#8220;, aggiunge Heather Welch, co-autrice e ricercatrice del NOAA e dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 della California, Santa Cruz. &#8220;Per raggiungere obiettivi di conservazione concreti, spesso le attivit\u00e0 industriali devono essere limitate in modo significativo, o viceversa. In questo caso, c&#8217;\u00e8 un beneficio di conservazione potenzialmente significativo per le balene, con costi molto contenuti per l&#8217;industria marittima.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Le aree ad alto rischio di collisioni per le quattro specie di cetacei considerate si trovano principalmente lungo le coste del Mediterraneo, di alcune zone delle Americhe, dell&#8217;Africa meridionale e dell&#8217;Asia. Il team internazionale di ricerca, che comprende esperti dai cinque continenti, ha raccolto qualcosa come <strong>435.000 avvistamenti<\/strong>, provenienti dalle fonti pi\u00f9 disparate \u2013 monitoraggi governativi, segnalazioni da parte del pubblico, studi di marcatura satellitare e persino vecchi registri della baleneria. Per individuare le zone dove maggiore \u00e8 la probabilit\u00e0 di incontro tra balene e navi, tali dati sono stati sovrapposti ai percorsi di <strong>176.000 navi mercantili<\/strong> tracciate, dal 2017 al 2022, attraverso i sistemi di identificazione automatica delle navi (AIS), ed elaborati con un algoritmo di Global Fishing Watch.<\/p>\n<p>Lo studio ha cos\u00ec identificato alcune delle aree ad alto rischio gi\u00e0 note, tra cui il Mediterraneo, assieme alla costa pacifica del Nord America, il Panama, il Mar Arabico, lo Sri Lanka, le Canarie. Ha per\u00f2 anche messo in evidenza regioni meno studiate ma altrettanto a rischio, tra cui l&#8217;Africa meridionale, la costa del Brasile, del Cile, del Per\u00f9 e dell&#8217;Ecuador, le Azzorre, l\u2019Asia orientale, e le coste di Cina, Giappone e Corea del Sud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Misure obbligatorie<\/strong> per la riduzione delle collisioni sono molto rare, e coprono attualmente solo lo 0,54% degli \u201chotspot\u201d della balenottera azzurra e lo 0,27% della megattera, e nessuno della balenottera comune o del capodoglio. Molti <strong>hotspot di collisione<\/strong> rientrano in aree marine protette, che per\u00f2, essendo state istituite soprattutto per limitare pesca e inquinamento industriale, non prevedono limiti di velocit\u00e0 per le navi.<\/p>\n<p>Per tutte e quattro le specie, la stragrande maggioranza delle zone a rischio collisioni \u2013 cio\u00e8 pi\u00f9 del 95% \u2013 si trova lungo le coste, e quindi all&#8217;interno delle zone economiche esclusive nazionali. Ci\u00f2 significa che ogni Paese ha la possibilit\u00e0 di implementare misure di protezione in coordinamento con l&#8217;Organizzazione Marittima Internazionale (IMO) delle Nazioni Unite. &#8220;Questo \u00e8 un aspetto positivo&#8221;, afferma Nisi \u201cperch\u00e9 significa che i singoli Paesi hanno la <strong>possibilit\u00e0 di intervenire<\/strong> concretamente.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Le poche misure attualmente esistenti sono per lo pi\u00f9 limitate alla costa pacifica del Nord America e \u2013 forse sorprendentemente &#8211; al <strong>Mar Mediterraneo<\/strong>. \u201cLungo la costa orientale della Grecia ionica sono state spostate pi\u00f9 al largo alcune <strong>rotte delle navi<\/strong>, riducendo cos\u00ec significativamente la sovrapposizione con l\u2019areale dei capodogli. In Mar Ligure invece, dove il rischio di collisioni \u00e8 particolarmente alto, ci sono al momento degli studi in corso, che si concentrano sulle tecnologie per munire le imbarcazioni di un <strong>sistema di allerta<\/strong>, che informi l\u2019equipaggio della presenza di una balena in tempo per ridurre la velocit\u00e0\u201d, aggiunge Simone Panigada, coautore della pubblicazione e Presidente dell\u2019Istituto Tethys. &#8220;Una velocit\u00e0 ridotta delle navi comporterebbe anche altri benefici, come un minor inquinamento acustico subacqueo, la diminuzione delle emissioni di gas serra e il miglioramento della qualit\u00e0 dell&#8217;aria, a tutto vantaggio delle popolazioni che vivono lungo le coste\u201d aggiunge Nisi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Proteggere le balene dalle collisioni con le navi \u00e8 una grande sfida globale che richieder\u00e0 uno sforzo concertato da parte di organizzazioni di conservazione, governi e compagnie di navigazione&#8221;, conclude Jono Wilson della <em>The Nature Conservancy<\/em>, tra gli enti finanziatori dello studio. &#8220;Le balene svolgono un ruolo cruciale negli ecosistemi marini.
