Three sperm whales have already been resighted dur Three sperm whales have already been resighted during the very first week at sea of the #CetaceanSanctuaryResearch team #CSR1. Harald is an old acquaintance of ours, sighted every summere since 2009! Stunt has been encountered since 2017. “New2” is from last year and he hasn’t a name yet. Fancy giving him a name? Check the page “name your whale” on our website – LINK IN BIO.

“New2”, già incontrato l’anno scorso, invece ancora non ha un nome. Volete sceglierlo voi? Alla voce “donazioni” del sito di Tethys… LINK IN BIO.

‼️‼️‼️ The main threats to Mediterrane ‼️‼️‼️
The main threats to Mediterranean monk seals in the Inner Ionian Sea Archipelago derive to a large extent from the disturbance that boat-based tourism exerts in the seals’ key habitat. Although negative interactions with fishing activities also present an element of concern, in the next months, most dramatically July and August, boat-based tourism will be an intense source of disturbance for the seals in the area.
Historical evidence suggests that Mediterranean monk seals commonly used to haul out on open beaches. And yet, in more recent times -probably as an adaptation to human hostility and disturbance - seals are known to seek refuge inside remote marine caves.
👇👇👇
During the long-term monitoring on monk seal ecology and status in the Ionian Islands, researchers of the @ioniandolphinproject have observed more than once, outside of the tourist season, individual seals resting on beaches that in summer are subjected to intense disturbance from human visitors.
Human behaviour generating disturbance to monk seals in their habitat is largely caused by a lack of knowledge and of understanding of the delicate conservation status of the species and their space requirements.
🙏🏼Please, have a look at the very basic monk seal watching guidelines (@ioniandolphinproject profile) and if you ever encounter these fascinating and endangered creatures keep them in mind, act responsibly and do your share to protect them.

If you encounter a monk seal at sea, NEVER TRY TO TOUCH IT and avoid making any noise. Remember that they are “at home”, where they feed, rest and breed. The Mediterranean monk seals are very shy and may leave that spot forever if they are being disturbed.

Today is #Earthday, a reminder to protect the envi Today is #Earthday, a reminder to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems and live a more sustainable life. Since 1970, when it was first celebrated, April 22nd is the day dedicated to provide a voice to an environmental consciousness. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is "Invest In our Planet".
Keeping in mind that what actually defines our planet, covering the majority of Earth’s surface and driving the water cycle that dominates the entire atmosphere, is the ocean, enjoy the Mediterranean, a small sea and one of the Earth's biodiversity hotspots..

When at sea, our actions can cause unnecessary str When at sea, our actions can cause unnecessary stress to dolphins by disrupting their natural behaviours.
This can be easily minimised by applying a basic #code of #conduct presented by the Ionian Dolphin Project when coming across #whales and #dolphins. Let's be dolphin #SMART
Stay back 100 metres from cetaceans
Move away cautiously if the animals show signs of disturbance (sudden change in behaviour)
Always put your engine in neutral when cetaceans are near
Refrain from feeding, touching, or swimming with wild dolphins or whales
Teach others to be SMART
