Experts were puzzled by the behavior, quite unusual for its species, of the 15-meters fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), which for several days remained stationary about 7 miles off the coast of Albenga, in the heart of the Pelagos Sanctuary, floating on the surface, semi-submerged, with minimal movement. “Fluker” or “Codamozza”, the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) with no flukes, has reached the heart of the Pelagos Sanctuary, and is now swimming between Finale Ligure and Genoa, as a local skipper, Walter Spagna, told the Tethys Research Institute.

Recent unfortunate incident of nine Giant devil rays landed in Tunisia
A new unfortunate incident took place this weekend in Port De Peche Kelibia, Tunisia, where nine Giant devil rays (Mobula mobular) were landed. The rays were captured as bycatch by a purse seine and consequently were landed and sold.

La migrazione delle balenottere nel Mediterraneo: dal tracking satellitare le indicazioni per tutelarle meglio
Pubblicati su “Scientific Reports”, rivista scientifica collegata alla prestigiosa “Nature”, i risultati della ricerca dell’Istituto Tethys – www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-03560-9
Il Mediterraneo ospita una popolazione di balenottere comuni (Balaenoptera physalus) che vengono studiate con regolarità ormai da oltre tre decenni, soprattutto nel mar Ligure e mar di Corsica, dove questi grossi misticeti hanno i loro quartieri estivi di alimentazione. Diversi studi sono stati compiuti su questi animali nel Mediterraneo settentrionale in estate, mentre ben poco si sapeva finora della loro destinazione invernale.

L’ARTE PER LE BALENE:
AL FORTE SANTA TECLA DI SANREMO UNA COLLETTIVA PER LA SALVAGUARDIA DEI CETACEI
Artists for Whale è l’evento di “contaminazione” tra arte e scienza organizzato per la salvaguardia e la conservazione dei grandi mammiferi marini. Promossa dal Comune di Sanremo, da Artists for Rhino e dall’Istituto Tethys ONLUS, la mostra verrà allestita nel suggestivo Forte di Santa Tecla a Sanremo, in occasione della manifestazione “I giorni della balena” (2 – 4 giugno), e durerà per alcune settimane.
