Help us continue our research

Just after turning thirty, the Cetacean Sanctuary Research project risks to come to a halt because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But with a small donation you can help continue a data collection which is unique of its kind and precious for the safeguard of whales and dolphins of the Mediterranean.

And in return … choose “your” sperm whale flukes.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic some of this year’s funds for our activities at sea came to a standstill and we also had to cancel several of our weekly cruises with researchers and citizen scientists. Yet this year it is particularly important to continue the data collection, which is among the longest in the Mediterranean Sea. Find out why.

30 YEARS – 30 SPERM WHALES

We have chosen 30 flukes of sperm whales and combined each one with a year. Choose one of the flukes, or your “special” year, make a donation, and you will get the customized certificate.

Is it the year you met? The year you were born? Or maybe when you met your first whale?
You can get the electronic certificate with your name, or you can dedicate it to someone.
Or….you can decide how to call one of the still unnamed sperm whales!

With a donation you can help us guarantee the continuity of the research, and in particular to cover the costs of the zoom lens for photo-identification. You will contribute to the protection of whales and dolphins and get a WHALE SUPPORTER certificate with the flukes of one of “our” sperm whales, of your choice.

DONATION OPTIONS

Choose a whale/year

Get the electronic WHALE SUPPORTER certificate with your name (or the name of someone you want to dedicate it) and a picture of the chosen sperm whale. Minimum donation is 10 Euro.
Take a look of the whales

Choose a name for a sperm whale. If you, or your company, wish to support research with a donation of € 500 or more, you will have the opportunity to name one of the “new” sperm whales identified in the past two years.

Photoidentification: cetaceans one by one

There are tens of thousands of whales and dolphins pictures taken in these 30 years of Cetacean Sanctuary Research project. Thanks to the presence of permanent natural characters, such as the shape of the dorsal fin, the coloration, scratches on the body, we have photo-identified more than a thousand individuals of seven different species; they are all those of the Sanctuary except the striped dolphins, which are too numerous and for majority they do not show useful signs on the body.

Here is the number of “known” whales and dolphins:

  • Fin whale: 505
  • Sperm whale: 167
  • Pilot whale: 146
  • Bottlenose dolphin: 155
  • Risso’s dolphin: 272
  • Cuvier’s beaked whale: 26
  • Common dolphin: 14
