Highlights from the latest cruise: CSR 13 (August 8th – 14th)

  • Fin whale CSR Diary

“Blow!” – that’s how last week started: two sperm whales on the first day! On the same day we also spotted a nice group of more than 30 bottlenose dolphins and some striped dolphins with tiny newborn individuals. On the next day, due to bad weather, we managed to leave the harbour for only one, yet efficient hour. As soon as we put our bow out of Portosole, we met another group of bottlenose dolphins. In the afternoon after lunch and a swim at the beach, we had a nice lesson and discussion about cetaceans ecology and conservation in the Pelagos Sanctuary.

On Thursday, despite having to stay in the harbour for another day of bad weather, we took the opportunity to visit the charming village of Bussana Vecchia. But the week at sea was not over yet. In the last two days, we sailed west to the Lérins Isles, in France, where we spent the night on the deck, looking up at the wonderful sky, filled with shooting stars. On Saturday, on our way back to Sanremo, we were greeted by several groups of striped dolphins, about a dozen of turtles, and a very funny sunfish!

Thanks to all the volunteers for joining us on board and sharing their inspiring life stories with us during the week!
