Upcoming IMMA workshop in Malaysia
The third Regional Workshop of the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force (MMPATF) will take place from 12th to 16th March in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, with the aim to identify Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) in the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas Region.
Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) are areas encompassing crucial habitats for marine mammal species, which can potentially be considered for conservation measures by governments, intergovernmental organisations, conservation groups, and the general public.
Previous workshops focussed on the Mediterranean in 2016 and on the Pacific Islands in 2017. Further meetings are planned for Western Indian Ocean and Arabian Seas (2019), Australia-New Zealand waters and South East Indian Ocean (2020), and South East Tropical and Temperate Pacific Ocean (2021).
