A few more #comments by the participants to #CSR13 A few more #comments by the participants to #CSR13 of last week:

To me this has opened up to a whole new world - the world of the marine mammals. Being at sea for hours and hours looking for AND SPOTTING these great, impressive animals and at the same time enjoying the wind, the salty water and swimming in "the big blue" gives you a feeling of peace and harmony.

If someone had told me I was going to have an experience like this I would have never believed. I never thought I would see so many different species in such little time, doing so many incredible things. Seeing sperm whales "smile" and listening to them clicking underwater is the kind of experience that really connects you with nature in a special way.

Sperm whales are often seen with their mouth open underwater!

A few more comments from last week's participants aboard "Pelagos":

This was the most overwhelmingly beautiful thing I ever did. (...) It felt as if we were one big family traveling together.
Marla, 17 years old, student, Germany

An incredible experience that involves the Mediterranean marine mammals but also an incredible human experience. During these 4 weeks on board the Pelagos, I met so many wonderful people. First of all, a very attentive crew and researchers, who passionately transmitted throughout the cruise, their knowledge on the species that populate the Pelagos sanctuary and the Mediterranean in general. Then, great participants from all over the world, which also makes this adventure a real cultural exchange.
Quentin, 21 years old, Lyon - France.

This week, we also saw some amazing animals and I've enjoyed every single encounter, even if it was the third, fourth or fifth time to see a species.a

Tethys’ #lonianDolphinProject has been attending Tethys’ #lonianDolphinProject has been attending the 24th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals #SMM22 in Palm Beach, Florida (1-5 August) with two posters.
The first, presented by @joan_gonzalvo, on the monk seals inhabiting the water of the inner lonian Archipelago, suggests that underwater caves may represent an important habitat for these animals in the area. The poster has been prepared in collaboration with @octopus_foundation.
The second poster, presented by @karm.ahs
focuses on the various types of skin lesions detected showed by the bottlenose dolphins resident in the Gulf of Ambracia. The study suggests that these skin disorders may be the consequence of dolphin exposure to high levels of pollution, mostly derived by local agriculture.

Dolphins often jump out of the water. Although we Dolphins often jump out of the water. Although we might like the show, this is not for our entertainment! The reasons for jumping can be several ones: most likely the dolphins are socializing /interacting with each other, or they are taking a look on what's going on above sea level.

Spesso i delfini saltano fuori dall'acqua.

“I have to admit, joining the Pelagos project was one of the best decisions of my life. Seeing animals over five times your size a couple meters away is an experience I cannot even begin to describe. Not only was the research fascinating, the crew was also lovely and the food was delicious. I had an incredible time and would definitely like to come back.

Before joining the Pelagos Project I didn't know there were whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean, but seeing them first hand, changed my perception forever, most of the mammals in the Mediterranean are endangered which makes this project even more important (…) Joining the crew for one week was an amazing experience that I wouldn't trade for the world. I learned so much about the animals but also as a person and I built friendships that will last a lifetime.
