Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta ) are frequent

Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta ) are frequently spotted in our study area. This year, several even nested on the beaches of Liguria. Until a few years ago, this species only laid eggs in the southern Mediterranean.

Le tartarughe Caretta caretta vengono avvistate spesso nella nostra area di studio. Quest’anno diverse hanno anche fatto il nido sulle spiagge della Liguria. Fino a pochi anni fa questa specie, in Mediterraneo, si riproduceva solo in alcune località nella parte meridionale.

New techniques allow the detection of a species' p

New techniques allow the detection of a species' presence solely from the DNA traces it releases into the environment. The eWHALE project, funded by Biodiversa+ and coordinated by the University of Innsbruck, exploits the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to monitor biodiversity. Tethys collaborates by testing filters near whales and dolphins in the Pelagos Sanctuary.

Pilot whales have been spotted several times this summer in our study area. Despite their English name, they are large dolphins.

I globicefali sono stati avvistati diverse volte quest'estate nella nostra area di studio. Nonostante il nome inglese "pilot whales" si tratta di grossi delfini.

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is one of the two large cetaceans living in the #Mediterranean Sea. In summer it is regularly sighted in the waters of the #PelagosSanctuary. The large flukes can be seen when it starts diving in search of the squid it feeds on.

Il capodoglio (Physeter macrocephalus) è uno dei due grandi cetacei del Mediterraneo. In estate viene avvistato regolarmente nelle acque del Santuario Pelagos. Quando tira fuori la coda si accinge a una immersione, alla ricerca dei calamari di cui si nutre.

Promosso da Regione Toscana e Giovani Sì, l’evento vuole stimolare la creazione un’opera dedicata alle balene per il loro ruolo cruciale negli ecosistemi marini, con lo scopo ultimo di sensibilizzare alla sostenibilità ambientale. L’artista che vincerà potrà decorare una auto appositamente dedicata. Possono partecipare artisti della Toscana under 35.
