Tethys is taking part in the Bluescape project fun Tethys is taking part in the Bluescape project funded by the Pelagos Initiative, led by the Milan Polytechnic, with the aim of establishing how much the Sanctuary contributes in terms of blue carbon ‘sink’ (i.e. what the seas store, helping to eliminate CO2, the main greenhouse gas). Activities on board ‘Pelagos’ include measuring oxygen, pH, chlorophyll, temperature and salinity at different depths by means of a sensor. La stagione di campo 2025 del Cetacean Sanctuary R La stagione di campo 2025 del Cetacean Sanctuary Research inizierà il 26 maggio e continuerà fino a fine ottobre. La partecipazione è aperta a chiunque abbia voglia di vivere una settimana a fianco dei biologi marini esperti in balene e delfini. Le crociere partono da Sanremo Portosole ogni lunedi. I partecipanti rappresentano un supporto essenziale per i progetti e un insostituibile aiuto sul campo. Non è richiesta alcuna preparazione specifica o esperienza precedente in campo scientifico o con il whale watching, né in campo nautico: occorre solo spirito di adattamento e tanto entusiasmo. Ed è un’esperienza assolutamente unica! 180 km a nuoto in 5 giorni senza uscire dall’acq 180 km a nuoto in 5 giorni senza uscire dall’acqua: il nuotatore svizzero Noam Yaron, 28 anni, ritenterà questo record per chiedere maggior protezione per il Mediterraneo. Dopo un primo tentativo nell'agosto 2024, Yaron torna in acqua il prossimo giugno per coprire la distanza tra Calvi, in Corsica, e il Principato di Monaco, per conquistare il record per la nuotata continua più lunga in muta in neutralità di corrente. Oltre alla sfida sportiva, l'obiettivo è sensibilizzare sull’urgenza di proteggere il Mediterraneo e la sua biodiversità. L’appuntamento, non a caso, sarà proprio poco prima della Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sull’Oceano che si terrà a Nizza dal 9 al 13 giugno 2025. Il Mediterraneo per quanto piccolo a confronto del resto degli oceani, ospita una biodiversità eccezionale, oggi sempre più in pericolo, e contemporaneamente vede concentrarsi nelle sue acque una quantità enorme di traffico marittimo, in continuo aumento – per citare solo una delle minacce che incombono, per esempio, sui grandi cetacei. Il rischio di collisioni tra navi e balenottere comuni o capodogli preoccupa seriamente, precisano gli esperti dell’Istituto #Tethys. Within the framework of the @LIFE SEADETECT projec Within the framework of the @LIFE SEADETECT project aimed at creating an automated system for reducing the risk of collision between vessels and marine mammals or other floating obstacles, a visit was organised in Marseilles (France) on board the ferry ‘Piana’ of ‘La Méridionale’. An innovative system with multiple high-sensitive complementary sensors, aimed at allowing vessels to self-detect large marine mammals, is being installed and tested on board. Tethys’ experts present were Simone Panigada @simopani and Margherita Zanardelli.
