Join us next summer for a truly unforgettable expe Join us next summer for a truly unforgettable experience with the Ionian Dolphin Project (#IDP), studying marine mammals in Greece!
Be part of our scientific team and be involved in all aspects of the research, by taking the sea on a daily basis and helping the Tethys researchers in analysing data collected during the surveys. We don’t work only with bottlenose and common dolphins! The Mediterranean monk seal represents one of our main conservation focus.
The project’s field base is located in the village of Vonitsa, a few steps from the sea.
It’s aa amazing adventure, enriched by the sight of beautiful landscapes and a nice company. In 30 years more than 2000 participants from over 40 nations have joined the IDP. They have provided deeply needed support and helped obtain crucial data.
This year choose a different way to spend your #holidays: contribute to the conservation of the marine environment!
Apply now and be part of the worldwide community of the Tethys Research Institute supporters!!

The research vessel Maria S. Merian (cruise MSM115 The research vessel Maria S. Merian (cruise MSM115 ) arrived in the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula where a large number of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) concentrate. Researchers, among which Simone and Viola Panigada from the Tethys Research Institute, started the data collection in the field: by means of satellite telemetry, migratory paths of fin whales will be tracked to deduce migratory destinations and breeding grounds. Also group behavior, hunting strategies, abundance and distribution will be studied. Concurrently, krill will be surveyed together with with abiotic and biotic environmental parameters. Genetic samples, photoidentification images and fin whale vocalizations will be collected as well.

Today’s #WorldWhaleDay. Whale actively contribut Today’s #WorldWhaleDay.
Whale actively contribute to keep ocean healthy, not least by fertilizing phytoplancton which in turn removes CO2 (greenhouse effect) and provides O2.
Whales are umbrella-species: protecting them indirectly protects the ecological community of the oceans.
Being on top of the food chain they are also sentinel species, able to provide advance ”warning” of danger to the ecosystem, like some kind of pollution, depletion of fish stocks and much more. Whale are amazing and … essential!

Collisions with boats, particularly high-speed one Collisions with boats, particularly high-speed ones, are among the leading causes of non-natural mortality for large cetaceans in all oceans, but especially in the #PelagosSanctuary.
Tethys is among the partners of LIFE-SEADETECT, a project aimed at creating an automated system for reducing the risk of collision between vessels and marine mammals or other floating obstacles.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regu The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulates shipping in the NW Mediterranean to protect endangered whales through the "Particularly Sensitive Sea Area" (PSSA) protection status
Last December the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO has decided, at the proposal of Spain, France, Italy and Monaco, to declare the North-Western Mediterranean region a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) with the aim of reducing ship collisions with the large cetaceans (sperm whales and fin whales), which still inhabit this area of intense maritime traffic.
The NW Mediterranean PSSA comprises the waters between Valencia and Genoa, a critical habitat for fin whales and sperm whales. These include:

• the Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor, between the coast of Catalonia and Valencia and the Balearic Islands, declared a Marine Protected Area by the Spanish Government and a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) by the Barcelona Convention,
• the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary in the Ligurian Sea,
• the Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMA) called «Gulf of Lions Shelf» and «Slopes and Canyons System of the North-Western Mediterranean Sea».
